Department of Physics Sets Expectations for New Students at Freshers’ Orientation
The Department of Physics at the College of Science, KNUST has held an orientation programme for first-year students, aimed at introducing them to the department’s academic structure, staff and opportunities available throughout their course of study.
Speaking at the programme, Head of Department, Prof. Francis Ampong, delivered the opening address, outlining the department’s vision, academic expectations and the standards required for success in the study of physics.

He also urged freshers to remain disciplined, committed and inquisitive as they begin their academic journey.
Speaking on career prospects, Prof. Aboagye Menyeh highlighted the relevance of physics beyond the classroom, noting its application across everyday life, technology and modern industry. He also encouraged students to approach the discipline with curiosity and a problem-solving mindset.
Dr. Donkor addressed examination-related issues, providing guidance on assessment procedures and stressing the importance of academic integrity. His presentation focused on helping students navigate their studies responsibly and avoid common academic challenges.

The orientation also featured a presentation by Dr. Henry Martin, who introduced a new Artificial Intelligence course initiative at KNUST and explained the registration process to interested students. Mr. Edwin Bawaah subsequently introduced members of the department’s technical staff, underscoring their role in supporting laboratory work and practical training.
Student engagement was further strengthened when Master Jeffery Oteng-Afriyie introduced the executives of the Physics Students Association of Ghana, KNUST Chapter (PHYSAG-KNUST). He outlined the association’s role in student welfare, leadership development and academic support.
