GGQC—DPG 2025 Departure and Arrival: Bridging Nations through Physics

Thanks to the fundamental branch of physics called quantum mechanics, technologies like infrared and fingerprint sensors have revolutionized security systems, and mobile phones have connected the world. As 2025 marks 100 years since the initial development of quantum theory — the foundation of modern technology — the 2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) celebrates both the triumphs and challenges of this remarkable journey.
In the spirit of the worldwide recognition of this milestone, Ghana joins Germany through the Ghana-Germany Quantum Connect (GGQC) project to participate in the 88th Annual Conference of the German Physical Society (DPG).
A delegation from Ghana, comprising lecturers and students from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), arrived at Düsseldorf International Airport on March 9, 2025. They were warmly received by Professor Dieter Meschede — a distinguished German physicist renowned for his contributions to quantum optics and atomic physics, and former president of the DPG (2018–2020).
Professor Meschede accompanied the delegation to their accommodation at DJH Jugendherberge Bonn, a tranquil youth hostel surrounded by greenery. That evening, the group was treated to a traditional German dinner — a warm welcome that set the tone for the days ahead.
