Abdul Aziz Wumpini Fuseini
Abdul Aziz Wumpini Fuseini is a master's student in the double degree program linking the MPhil in Mathematical and Computational Physics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana with the MSc in Mathematical Engineering at the Università degli Studi dell'Aquila, Italy. He studied mathematics at KNUST for his BSc and stayed on for his national service as a teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics while also tutoring numerical analysis and ODEs for the College of Science Students' Achievement Programme (COSSAP).
His research is driven by a practical question: how can water treatment plants respond faster when the quality of incoming water changes? After heavy rains, turbid raw water sets up density currents in circular clarifiers that can carry solids straight past the settling zone and on to the filters, shortening filter runs and raising the risk of breakthrough. Abdul Aziz is developing a digital twin (DT) framework that captures this behaviour by combining computational fluid dynamics, reduced-order modelling, and data assimilation. The aim is a tool operators can actually use. It warns them early when effluent turbidity is likely to rise, before the filters are affected, and helps them decide on flow rates, coagulant dosing, and desludging. It also lets them test scenarios safely before they happen.
