Overview

Ghana is known to possess abundant mineral resources especially gold, diamonds, bauxite and manganese. These are currently exploited mainly for export. Apart from these mineral resources, Ghana is also endowed with both surface and groundwater resources, the latter accounting for much of the water supply (hand pumps, dug-out-wells etc.) of the rural population. For the nation to continue to explore and exploit these natural resources more efficiently, the need to train highly skilled manpower cannot be overemphasized. In this respect, the PhD Programme in Geophysics is designed to produce highly qualified geophysicists and aims at providing a firm grounding in basic and advanced concepts and methods as well as offering a selection of special interest courses related to developing areas of the subject, particularly, groundwater, environmental geophysics and mineral exploration. The PhD Programme in Geophysics (emphasis on groundwater, environmental geophysics and mineral exploration) is not being offered currently in any of the nation's universities. The programme will also produce scientists who will develop cutting edge methodologies and techniques in the geophysical sciences.

Aims:

The PhD Geophysics is designed to produce qualified geophysicists in academia and industry.

Objectives

  1. To equip PhD students with the necessary analytical skills in research to tackle complex geophysical issues and challenges

  2. To provide a forum for the exchange of research output through theses, seminars, conferences and publications

  3. To produce professionals with postgraduate qualifications in geophysics needed for the economic development of Ghana.
