The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Sub-Saharan African Student Conference recently held its annual gathering of young geoscientists and innovators, and the West Africa Geophysics (WAGeo) Lab Team from the Department of Physics proudly made its mark. Team members demonstrated excellence across various categories, further underscoring the lab’s role in advancing geophysical research in West Africa.

In the prestigious Challenge Bowl competition, a fast-paced geoscience quiz that tests knowledge in earth sciences, Mr Emmanuel Boahen and Mr Evans Yiadom Boakye, both former undergraduate researchers on the TIDEKIT project, placed 3rd. Their remarkable performance earned them a coveted spot in the 2025 SEG Global Challenge Bowl, where they will represent Sub-Saharan Africa on the world stage.

In the technical paper contest, two current MPhil students were also celebrated for their academic contributions. Ms Dorcas Asiedu on the TWAS-UNESCO Digging Deep project secured 2nd place while Mr Baah Asare-Bediako on the TIDEKIT project earned 3rd place. Their papers, which focused archaeology related issues and innovative approaches to understanding coastal hazards respectively, were commended for their scientific rigor and relevance.

The PI of the WAGeo Lab, Dr Cyril Dziedzorm Boateng, congratulated the team members and encouraged them to continue dreaming big as they chart a path of excellence in geophysics.

These outstanding achievements reflect not only the hard work and brilliance of the individual students but also the strength of the WAGeo Lab as it continues on its ambitious path of nurturing young talent and promoting cutting-edge, locally grounded research in geophysics.

As the lab continues to grow, the success of its student researchers at regional and global levels serves as a powerful reminder of what is possible when research, mentorship, and opportunity come together.
