The Ghana Photonics and Optics Laboratory (GPOL) at the Department of Physics, College of Science, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has showcased its research capabilities and locally developed scientific technologies to the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, during his Ashanti Regional tour.

The visit provided an opportunity for the laboratory, led by its Principal Investigator and Scientific Lead, Dr. Akyana Britwum, to demonstrate how its research is contributing to technological innovation and expanding access to scientific instrumentation in Ghana.

Among the technologies demonstrated was a low-cost Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) setup designed for encryption training, highlighting the potential application of quantum technologies in cybersecurity. The team also presented affordable, locally built spectrometers designed to support scientific investigations in areas such as health and environmental monitoring.

The laboratory further highlighted its collaboration with the University of St Andrews in Scotland through the UK-funded BOSOMTWE project. The partnership supports capacity building in microscopy and spectroscopy while strengthening local expertise in advanced scientific instrumentation.

The visit underscored the role of GPOL in advancing photonics research, developing homegrown technological solutions, and training scientists to address emerging scientific and technological challenges.

Through its research, innovation, and international collaborations, the Ghana Photonics and Optics Laboratory continues to contribute to building local scientific capacity and supporting Ghana’s technological development.
