Dr Akyana Britwum to speak at African Photonics Hour during SPIE Photonics West 2026
Dr Akyana Britwum from the Department of Physics at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will present at the African Photonics Hour during SPIE Photonics West 2026, one of the world’s largest and most influential optics and photonics events held in San Francisco, USA, from 17 to 22 January 2026.
The African Photonics Hour is a special session dedicated to showcasing presentations and recorded talks from leading researchers, innovators and educators with ties to Africa’s photonics research ecosystem. It offers a unique platform to share insights on the state of photonics research, education, capacity building, industry engagement and future opportunities across the continent.
In his presentation, Dr Britwum will:
- Highlight the work of the Ghana Photonics and Optics Laboratory within KNUST’s Department of Physics, showcasing recent research activities, innovations and student engagement programmes.
- Discuss efforts to strengthen photonics education and training in Ghana, with an emphasis on practical skill building, student support and outreach initiatives.
- Explore the broader impact of these activities, including how expanding photonics capacity can contribute to local problem-solving, workforce development and long-term innovation on the African continent.

Dr Britwum’s participation underscores KNUST’s leadership in photonics research and its commitment to developing scientific capacity within Ghana and beyond. The session will also offer opportunities for networking and collaboration with global leaders in optics and photonics.
The Department of Physics congratulates Dr Britwum on this significant representation and looks forward to the insights and connections that will emerge from this global engagement.
