ELAIS-QST 2024

Theme: Harnessing Quantum Science and Technology for Innovation and Development in Ghana (Africa)

Date: Between August 2024 and January 2025 (Engagement was at least twice a every week)

Location: E-learning (Online lectures, Learning management system and others) from KNUST E-Learning Centre https://vclass.knust.edu.gh/

Audience: a) Undergraduates (> 2nd Year) b) Graduates from Bachelors c) National Service Personnel’s (Teaching Assistants) d) Master Students and e) Professionals with Strong interest in the Areas.

Background: Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Engineering and others.

Topic: Quantum Science and Technology: Quantum Algorithms, Quantum Simulation, Quantum Machine Learning, Quantum Chemistry, Quantum Materials, Quantum Computing, Quantum Information, Quantum Metrology, and Others.

Application and Selection: Publicity was undertaken by sending emails to various universities, professors across Africa and flyers were circulated via all social media handles (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and others) using KNUST medium, Department of Physics, College of Science, KNUST E-Learning, the Organizers and other well-wishers.

The opening ceremony was done with about 250 participants:

  • Provost, College of Science, KNUST,
  • Director of KNUST E-Learning Centre,
  • Head, Department of Physics, KNUST
  • Invited Guest Speaker – Prof. Mrs. Aba Bentil Andam
  • Collaborators and Partners
  • Professors of African Universities
  • About 197 Participants – All who applied

Foundational Courses:

Participants were taken through the following Courses:

  • Introduction to Python and Advance Python Programming
  • Linear Algebra
  • Quantum Mechanics

For a talk: Open to the Public

  • A faculty, postdoc, phd students and industrial partners.
  • The duration was for 45 mins to 1hr 30mins depending on Q&A session.
  • The talk was also via zoom, this were recorded, edited and placed on our YouTube channel for the public.

For a Mini-project:

  • A faculty, postdoc, and industrial partners
  • Participants were requested to select mini-projects and were assigned groups
  • Mini-project channel was created in LMS for discussion from time to time
  • Meeting date and times were solely due to the Mentor availability but was at least twice a Month.
  • Zoom credentials were made available for their meetings via LSM ;

August to December 2024, have recorded about 80 participants (regular attendance, quiz and assignment). 50 were assigned to mini-project. Hence, ELAIS-QST will issue about 80 certifications from Department of Physics, KNUST in Collaboration with KNUST E-Learning Centre. Also, Quantinuum, a partner than gave series of lectures in Quantum in Picture has also promised to issue a certificate all participants.
