As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international academic collaboration and research partnerships, a representative from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana, participated in a strategic international cooperation meeting held at the University of L’Aquila, Italy, in early July 2025.
The event brought together partner institutions from both Europe and Africa, and focused on advancing shared academic goals through research, mobility, and innovation. KNUST was represented by faculty members from the physics, mathematics departments and an assistant registrar from international programme office. They engaged in a series of targeted meetings and collaborative sessions with various stakeholders across the network.

Participation in InterMaths Summer School 2025 Planning

One key highlight of the visit was participation in the InterMaths Summer School 2025, held under the Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP) framework. The summer school, held from June 30 to July 4, brought together students and faculty from across Europe and Africa for intensive training in mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, AI, HPC, quantum computing and computational physics in engineering, physics and geology.

4. Meeting with the InterMaths Network & RealMaths Consortium
KNUST’s representative also met with the coordination office of the InterMaths Network and RealMaths Consortium, of which KNUST is a member. The meeting focused on consolidating the roles of African partners in joint research and student mobility, as well as sharing ideas for curriculum development and program sustainability.

5. Advancing the SMART Water Project
Finally, continued discussions were held with the SMART Water project team on the implementation of a Digital Twin system for waste and wastewater management in Ghana. This interdisciplinary project seeks to apply mathematical modelling and real-time data systems to improve water resource management in urban environments. The meeting served to refine strategic objectives and document new ideas toward implementation.
